Baby Cot, Playpen, Bed or Just Mattress… How Many Did I Ended Up Buying?

Baby Cot, Playpen, Mattress... Which Is The Right One For Your Toddler? Here is some loopy experience of my very own trial and error in being a first-time mom. At that time, I was asking myself which is the right one for my toddler? A little twist in the end… how many did I ended up buying actually :P There goes the should-have-been his education fund or my retirement fund.

Baby cot, grand parents all time favorites. Ah Kong, Ah Ma, baby cot is very expensive. I bought my first baby cot when I was in my final trimester of pregnancy. Costs about MYR299  or was it MYR399? The pic on the left was taken when he’s touching 2months. By the time my son reached 6months, the baby cot seemed to be a bit too small for his breast-fed size to toss around. He ended up crying each time he’s not able to turn his body and quite often, I see his fat little hand or leg sticking out.

Baby Cot, Playpen, Mattress... Which One To Buy For Your Toddler? So mommy started putting him in a playpen. I bought this playpen too when I was in my final trimester hoping it would come in handy. Indeed, it has! It has given me hundreds of hours to myself… no no no… rephrase… to my kitchen, to my laundry, etc.

Playpen mattress gets warm easily, so I put a breathable layer over it. The playpen was at a discount, nett about MYR180. Yea, cheaper than baby cot. There are plenty of fancy playpens in the market that are priced above baby cots.Baby Cot, Playpen, Bed, Mattress... Which Is The Right One For Your Toddler?

When he started to climb out, I have to take off the first deck. For play time, playpen is strongly recommended but for sleeping time, I find it quite tough especially when we’re trying to put down a sleeping baby, kgs in weight, gently on the l…o….w…e….r   deck. Ouch… my back.

Facing with an ‘undersized’ baby cot and a playpen too low for mommy’s aching back, mommy resumed to baby cot. At least, the baby cot lowest deck isn’t so l…o….w. And mommy devised a cunning plan! Get por por (grandma) to sponsor a BIGGER baby cot! LoL… Baby Cot big size MYR500-600, breathable mattress MYR300-400, Mattress Cover Set with Bumpers MYR200 – MYR300. According to the attached manual, it’s for newborn to 4years old. Should have bought a bigger sized baby cot initially. :P Not so soon Sarah.

By the time my son learn how to stand, he started to learn how to climb OUT from the big baby cot too. Yikes! For prevention, mommy placed rubber mats on the floor. Baby Cot also comes in very handy for baby learning to stand. He’ll need something to hold as a lever to get up and something gentle on their butt-bumping. Playpen is just flat. Opt for cylinder bars baby cot over flat wide bars. I also prefer to leave the rollers on the baby cot legs so that each time when he’s doing his standing exercise, I can easily push the cot away from his usual boring spot.

Then came our brilliant idea of a weekend getaway by the beach. The next thing we know, our son refused to sleep in his baby cot. Yikes! His preference has shifted to an adult bed. Mommy kept trying and trying insisting on the baby cot, he would just cry persistently. He preferred one of our guests’ bed over his faithful big baby cot.

Last resort, mommy sourced out a MYR100 thin queen sized mattress, put it over a layer of rubber mat and let the demanding boy toss as much as he likes. Sometimes he tossed right to the other end of his room but no worries… as he grow, he gets over it. Baby Cot, Playpen, Mattress... Which One To Buy For Your Toddler?Well, I did think about buying him a bed but I wanted a danger-proof environment in his room as much as it possibly could. I can’t be there watching him every second.

My lesson, after being tossed around on just a singular-topic, ‘BED’ for months, actually a thin layer queen/king sized mattress would work just fine. And it’s only MYR100! A full set queen sized bed sheet easily range from MYR30 to MYR300 and there are plenty of killer designs.

Moms with older kids would probably find it quite dangerous. We don’t want any stepping balloon game here. Baby cot may still be the best option for night sleep but remember, bigger size please. Hopefully your kid can stay put there till like 4 or perhaps 5?

Playpen really comes in handy in day time when mommy Baby Cot, Playpen, Mattress... Which One To Buy For Your Toddler?needs to get a lot of stuff done. But usage of playpen is short life. By the time he’s able to walk, he’ll prefer to claim his independence in cruising around the house than being grounded in a playpen. Sometimes things might not work out just as smooth as we thought it would.

How many beds did I ended up buying actually? 2 baby cots – one small and one big, a playpen and a mattress. What a big round :P
